Tooling source notes

  • Repair access is the edge case that bites: you can't strip the surrounding structure during a repair, and some jobs need 90° drills and heads. Know the tool envelope during design.Installer interview (aerospace tool services), 2026-09-25. Field experience, not a specification.
Removal (drill-out)Published procedure

Cherry CA-1005 (CherryLOCK catalog, covers wiredraw NAS1398/NAS1399), Rivet Removal

  1. “In thick material remove the lock by driving out the rivet stem, using a pin punch.” Cherry CA-1005 (CherryLOCK), p.25, Rivet Removal ↗
  2. “If the rivets have been installed in thin sheets, driving out the locked stem may damage the sheets. It is recommended that the stem be center punched first and a small center drill be used to provide a guide for a larger drill on top of the rivet stem. The larger drill can then be used to drill away the lock. Finally, use a pin punch to drive out the stem.” Cherry CA-1005 (CherryLOCK), p.25, Rivet Removal ↗
  3. “Drill nearly through the head of the rivet, using a drill the same size as the rivet shank. Do not drill completely through rivet head.” Cherry CA-1005 (CherryLOCK), p.25, Rivet Removal ↗
  4. “Break off rivet head, using a pin punch as a pry.” Cherry CA-1005 (CherryLOCK), p.25, Rivet Removal ↗
  5. “Drive out the remaining rivet shank with a pin punch having a diameter equal to the rivet shank.” Cherry CA-1005 (CherryLOCK), p.25, Rivet Removal ↗

Cautions

None of the removal procedures on file gives a composite-specific removal caution. The Monogram specs address composite at the hole instead: holes "reasonably round and free from burrs (metallic structure) and delamination (graphite/epoxy type structure)" (MBF2003 §5.1).

Put the tooling on the RFQ

The RFQ package adds these tools and gauges for the diameters on your lines, so the supplier quotes them with the fasteners.
