Removal (drill-out)Published procedure
FAA AC 43.13-1B, Par 4-52 b (Disassembly Prior to Repairing)
- “When rivets are removed, undercut rivet heads by drilling. Use a drill of the same size as the diameter of the rivet. Drilling must be exactly centered and to the base of the head only.” FAA AC 43.13-1B, p.4-12, Par 4-52 b ↗
- “After drilling, break off the head with a pin punch and carefully drive out the shank.” FAA AC 43.13-1B, p.4-12, Par 4-52 b ↗
- “On thin or unsupported metal skin, support the sheet metal on the inside with a bucking bar.” FAA AC 43.13-1B, p.4-12, Par 4-52 b ↗
Cautions
- “Removal of rivet heads with a cold chisel and hammer is not recommended because skin damage and distorted rivet holes will probably result.” FAA AC 43.13-1B, p.4-12, Par 4-52 b ↗
Also published: USAF T.O. 1-1A-8 §1.1.19 and Figure 1-9, Removal of Rivets
- “File a flat on manufactured head.” USAF T.O. 1-1A-8, p.1-26, Figure 1-9 Removal of Rivets ↗
- “Centerpunch the flat.” USAF T.O. 1-1A-8, p.1-26, Figure 1-9 Removal of Rivets ↗
- “Drill through the head. Use drill one size smaller than rivet shank.” USAF T.O. 1-1A-8, p.1-26, Figure 1-9 Removal of Rivets ↗
- “Remove weakened head with sharp chisel.” USAF T.O. 1-1A-8, p.1-26, Figure 1-9 Removal of Rivets ↗
- “Punch out rivet.” USAF T.O. 1-1A-8, p.1-26, Figure 1-9 Removal of Rivets ↗
Cautions
- “When removing rivets, care should be taken not to enlarge the rivet hole, as this would necessitate the use of a larger size rivet for replacement.” USAF T.O. 1-1A-8, p.1-24, §1.1.19 Removal of Rivets ↗
- “It is always preferable to work on the manufactured head rather than on the one that is bucked over, since the former will always be more symmetrical about the shank.” USAF T.O. 1-1A-8, p.1-24, §1.1.19 Removal of Rivets ↗
- “Remove the drill and, if the other rivet end is supported, shear the head off with a sharp chisel. Always cut along the direction of the plate edge. Firmly support the sheet from the opposite side and drive the shank out with a pin punch. If the rivet is unduly tight because of swelling between the sheets, drill the rivet out with an undersize drill.” USAF T.O. 1-1A-8, p.1-24, §1.1.19 Removal of Rivets ↗
None of the removal procedures on file gives a composite-specific removal caution. The Monogram specs address composite at the hole instead: holes "reasonably round and free from burrs (metallic structure) and delamination (graphite/epoxy type structure)" (MBF2003 §5.1).
Tool tables are the manufacturer's as published in the cited revision; confirm current tool PNs with the manufacturer or distributor before purchase. Not a certified process authority: install and remove per the OEM process specification.
