Installation tools
Pneumatic driver
Pneumatic power tool with adapter hood, wrench adapter and nose adapter
pneumatic
Hand tool
Hand tool: tool body, nose adapter and wrench adapter, turned by a 1/4 in. drive ratchet and 1/4 in. socket
hand
"The nose adapter is secured in the tool body and prevents the nut portion of the Jo-Bolt from turning during installation. The wrench adapter rides free inside the nose adapter and gets turning action from the ratchet wrench." Figure 1-43: "Hand tool may be locally fabricated. A stock nose adapter and wrench adapter will be used."
Grip, hole and inspection gauges
4F5 to 4F12 / 3P5 to 3P12
Stem break-off gauges (flush / protruding)
Checks: Stem break-off per Figure 1-42 Table 2: "If stem breaks above limits shown, the fastener is either too long or loose. If the stem breaks off below the limits shown, the grip is too short."
.005" feeler gage
Feeler gage
Checks: Head seating: reject if a 0.005 feeler enters to the shank; a 0.004 gap is acceptable over not more than 40 percent of the circumference.
Tooling source notes
- T.O. 1-1A-8 §1.4.7: "In no case shall power screwdrivers or drill tools used in conjunction with a 1/4 inch socket and ratchet wrench be used for installing Jo-Bolt fasteners."Government document, not interview: USAF T.O. 1-1A-8.
Removal (drill-out)Published procedure
USAF T.O. 1-1A-8 §1.4.10 and Figure 1-44, Jo-Bolt Removal
- “The procedure for the removal of Jo-Bolt depends on whether the fastener is clamped up tight or is loose. If the Jo-Bolt is clamped up tight in the hole, it can be removed by drilling just through the fastener head and then driving out the shank portion with a hammer and punch.” USAF T.O. 1-1A-8, p.1-94, §1.4.10 ↗
- “Removal when bolt is clamped up tight. Step 1: Select drill in accordance with Table 1. Drill to below head-shank juncture.” USAF T.O. 1-1A-8, p.1-96, §1.4.10; Figure 1-44 Jo-Bolt Removal ↗
- “Step 2: Select drill in accordance with Table II. Drill to depth of pilot hole.” USAF T.O. 1-1A-8, p.1-96, §1.4.10; Figure 1-44 Jo-Bolt Removal ↗
- “Step 3: With hammer and nominal size punch, sever head and drive out shank and blind head.” USAF T.O. 1-1A-8, p.1-96, §1.4.10; Figure 1-44 Jo-Bolt Removal ↗
- “If the Jo-Bolt is loose in the hole, it must be prevented from turning by using a drill bushing which has dogs to engage the head slots and a handle or other device to hold it. While holding the Jo-Bolt to prevent from turning, drill the bolt portion of the fastener completely out, removing the bolt head and fastener sleeve. After the bolt head and sleeve are removed, pick out the nut portion of the fastener.” USAF T.O. 1-1A-8, p.1-94, §1.4.10 ↗
- “Removal when bolt turns in hole while drilling. Step 1: Prevent nut from turning by engaging driving tool nose adapter. Hold nose adapter with hand tool handle or vise-grip pliers.” USAF T.O. 1-1A-8, p.1-96, §1.4.10; Figure 1-44 Jo-Bolt Removal ↗
- “Step 2: Select drill in accordance with Table 1. Drill through shank, severing bolt head.” USAF T.O. 1-1A-8, p.1-96, §1.4.10; Figure 1-44 Jo-Bolt Removal ↗
- “Step 3: Pick nut out of hole with punch.” USAF T.O. 1-1A-8, p.1-96, §1.4.10; Figure 1-44 Jo-Bolt Removal ↗
Cautions
- “For all drilling operations on Jo-Bolts, select a drill motor that does not turn over 500 rpm.” USAF T.O. 1-1A-8, p.1-94, §1.4.10 ↗

None of the removal procedures on file gives a composite-specific removal caution. The Monogram specs address composite at the hole instead: holes "reasonably round and free from burrs (metallic structure) and delamination (graphite/epoxy type structure)" (MBF2003 §5.1).
Tool tables are the manufacturer's as published in the cited revision; confirm current tool PNs with the manufacturer or distributor before purchase. Not a certified process authority: install and remove per the OEM process specification.
